We left Tahlequah around 8 and had a rainy morning drive to Oklahoma City. After grabbing some lunch we set up camp at Starbucks. Austin slept in the car last night so he took a Starbucks nap while I went to explore downtown. The “Bricktown” area of OKC is really pretty cool! The rain brought in some nice cool weather and I had a great time walking the river walk.
Tonight’s venue was called Joe’s Addiction. It is a great little coffee house / church in a pretty rough part of town and shares a street with 3 strip clubs and a police station…. The coffee house was hosting a free dinner and we had some delicious spaghetti while meeting some locals. The crowd seemed to dig my set and a sweet woman named Laura bought both records! However, the most memorable part of the night was definitely the conversations we had with our new friends at Joe’s. This place is real and I honestly didn’t want to leave. The people that hang out there live in a tough place but their heart was inspiring.
Tonight we’re staying with a great family in Edmund, OK. A friend from my church knows them and, even though we’d never met before, they were more than willing to let us crash at their home. We even have a stellar bunk bed! Looking forward to spending the day in Tulsa tomorrow. Goodnight, moon.
Today was long. We left Arlington around 9:15, had lunch about half way, and made it to Tahlequah around 2:00. The show (which had ten bands and should have been called a festival) was supposed to start at 3:00 but ended up starting around 5:00. To pass the time we walked around downtown and checked out Norris Park, the original location of the show before it was changed to Dream Theatre.
The venue was literally an abandoned movie theatre. It had a pretty cool vibe but was a billion degrees… The show ended up being pretty good though. We made some new friends and saw some great Oklahoma bands play!
Tonight we’re staying in the promoter, Jason’s, garage. Goodnight, moon.
Austin and I couldn’t have asked for a better kick-off show for this tour. I’m incredibly thankful for everyone who came! My good friend and mentor, Michael Ellis, opened the show and played a great set of originals and a Gordon Lightfoot cover. My set went smoothly and the audience sang along really nicely at the end of “Sending Out a Dove”. We received some really generous donations which will help with the costs of the tour. Bravo, Hurst!
